Round to Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands

In this topic, we learn to round numbers and money to the nearest tens and hundreds.

Topic: Round to Tens and Hundreds Using Number Line

  • A number line is used to round numbers and money

  • Represent a number to be rounded on a number line

  • When rounding to nearest ten, the number rounds to the nearest ten on the number line

  • When rounding to nearest hundred, the number round to the nearest hundred on the number line

Topic: Rounding to Tens and Hundreds Using Estimation

  • Identify the digit in the place you are rounding to

  • Keep the digit and replace all the digits following it by zeroes. This is the lower number

  • Add 1 to the digit in the place to which you are rounding, of the lower number

  • The number rounds to the lower number or higher number, depending on which is closer

Topic: Rounding to Thousands

  • Use a number line or estimation to round a number to thousands

  • Represent the number on a number line. The number rounds to the thousand, which is closer to the number on the number line

  • To use estimation, identify the digit in the place to which the number needs to be rounded to

  • Replace all digits following it with zeroes. This is the lower number. Add 1 to the identified digit in the lower number. This is the higher number

  • The number rounds to the lower number or the higher number, depending on which ever is closer

  • Steps to follow to round a number:
    Step 1: Identify the place to round to
    Step 2: Look at the digit to the right of it
    Step 3: If the digit is 5 or greater than 5 then add 1 to the place to round. If the digit is less than 5 then the place remains the same
    Step 4: All digits to the right of the place are replaced by zeroes
