Concept of Decimal Place Value

This topic deals with the concept of place value for numbers with decimal point, or decimal numbers.

Topic: Using Models and Number Lines

  • Decimals are used to write numbers that are between whole numbers

  • To write the decimal number represented by the model, we need to count the number of shaded squares

  • A completely shaded grid represents 1 whole

  • A square with 34 parts shaded represents 34 hundredths or 0.34 as a decimal

  • In a number line with 10 divisions, marked from 0 till 0.1, value of each division is 0.01

Topic: Decimal to Thousandths

  • Decimals are used to write numbers that are between whole numbers

  • A decimal with one digit after the decimal point names tenths

  • A decimal with two digits after the decimal point names hundredths

  • A decimal with three digits after the decimal point names thousandths

Topic: Standard and Expanded Form of Decimals

  • Expanded form shows the number expanded into an addition statement

  • To write in standard form we need to multiply each number with its period and then add

  • Value of each digit = Digit x Place value. For example, in 12.79, value of 1 = 1 x tens = 1 x 10

  • Expanded form of 12.79 is 10 + 2 + .7 + .09
