Concepts of Rounding Decimals

This topic covers the concept of rounding decimals to nearest whole numbers and nearest tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. It also covers the concept of rounding up and rounding down.

Topic: Round Up and Round Down

  • To round a decimal down to a given place, just drop all the digits to the right of the desired place

  • To round a decimal up, find the digit next to the desired place, if it is 0, leave the digit unchanged, otherwise add 1 to the digit at the desired place and remove all the digits after that place

Topic: Round to the Nearest Whole Number

  • Rules for rounding a digit at a given position: 1) Identify the digit to be rounded; 2) Look at the digit to the right of the digit that needs to be rounded; 3) If the digit to the right is 5 or greater, we will add 1 to the digit to be rounded. If digit is 4 or less, the digit to be rounded remains the same; 4) Replace all the digits to the right of the digit that has been rounded with zeros

  • Zeros at the end (to the right of the decimal point) do not serve as placeholders as they do in whole numbers. After rounding decimal numbers, we should remove zeros at the end (to the right of the decimal point)

Topic: Round to the Nearest Tenth or Hundredth

  • Rules for rounding a digit at a given position:
Step 1: Identify the digit to be rounded.

Step 2: Look at the digit to the right of the digit that needs to be rounded.

Step 3: If the digit to the right is 5 or greater, we will add 1 to the digit to be rounded. If digit is 4 or less, the digit to be rounded remains the same.

Step 4: Replace all the digits to the right of the digit that has been rounded with zeros

  • Zeros at the end (to the right of the decimal point) do not serve as placeholders as they do in whole numbers. After rounding decimal numbers, we should remove zeros at the end (to the right of the decimal point)
