Rounding Numbers and Money

This topic deals with the concept of rounding numbers and money. We learn to round numbers to the nearest tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, and millions. We also learn to round money to the nearest dollars and ten cents.

Topic: Round Numbers

  • Rounding is a way of adjusting numbers to make them simpler and easier to work with. Rounded numbers usually end with a zero

  • If the number we are rounding is halfway or more than halfway between the rounded numbers, we round up to the next number

  • If the number we are rounding is less than halfway between the rounded number, we round down to the previous number

  • To round numbers using place values, identify the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded. If the digit is less than 5, round down. If the digit is 5 or greater, round up

  • For example: 1,890 rounds up to 2,000 (to the nearest thousand)

  • To round dollars to the nearest dollar, look closely at the number of cents. If the number of cents is 50 or more, round up. If the number of cents is less than 50, round down

  • Round cents using place values

  • To round numbers using place values, identify the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded. If the digit is less than 5, round down. If the digit is 5 or greater, round up

  • For example: $49.58 rounds up to $50.00 (to the nearest dollar)
