Experimental Probability

In this topic we will understand the concept of experimental probability, which is used when determining the probabilities of different outcomes obtained in an experiment.

Topic: Identifying Outcomes

  • An experiment is an activity involving chance that can have different results. Flipping a coin and spinning a spinner are examples of experiments

  • The different results that can occur are called outcomes of the experiment. For example, if you are flipping a coin, heads is one possible outcome

Topic: Finding Experimental Probability

  • If an experiment is repeated many times, the experimental probability of an event ≈ Number of times the event occurs / Total number of trials

  • An event is a set of outcomes to which a probability is assigned

  • A trial is the act of testing something

Topic: Comparing Experimental Probabilities

  • Experimental probability ≈ Number of times the event occurs / Total number of trials

  • The higher the experimental probability of an event, the higher the chances of it happening
