Ratios and Equivalent Ratios

In this topic, we learn to represent ratios in different ways. We also learn the concept of equivalent ratios and determine whether two ratios are equivalent.

Topic: Ratios

  • A ratio is a comparison of two counts or measures that have the same unit

  • A ratio can be written in many different ways: in words, as a fraction, and with a colon

  • There are three kinds of ratio: part to part, part to total, and total to part

Topic: Equivalent Ratios

  • Equivalent ratios can be represented by equivalent fractions

  • Two ratios that are equivalent, form a proportion

  • We can use cross products to see if the ratios are equivalent

  • To find a cross product, multiply the numerator of one fraction by the denominator of the other and then repeat the process for the other numerator and denominator

  • We can also use LCD to compare ratios

Topic: Find the Missing Term

  • To find the missing number in a proportion, express the ratios as fractions and then find the cross product

  • To find a cross product, multiply the numerator of one fraction by the denominator of the other and then repeat the process for the other numerator and denominator
