Compare and Order Rational Numbers

This topic covers comparing and ordering of rational numbers.

Topic: Comparison Of Like and Unlike Fractions

  • Fraction: A number of the form p/q, where p is a whole number and q is a natural number. For example: 2/3

  • Like Fractions: Fractions with the same denominator are like fractions. For example: 5/16 and 3/16 are like fractions since their denominators are same

  • Unlike Fractions: Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions. For example: 1/2 and 3/4 are unlike fractions as their denominators are different

  • When two fractions have the same denominator, the one with the smaller numerator is smaller

Topic: Order Fractions

  • Fraction: A number of the form p/q, where p is a whole number and q is a natural number. For example: 2/3

  • Like Fractions: Fractions with the same denominator are like fractions. For example: 5/16 and 3/16 are like fractions since their denominators are same

  • Unlike Fractions: Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions. For example: 1/2 and 3/4 are unlike fractions as their denominators are different

  • When two fractions have the same denominator, the one with the smaller numerator is smaller

Topic: Comparison by Decimal Conversions

  • Fraction: A number of the form p/q, where p is a whole number and q is a natural number. For example: 2/3

  • Decimal: A number that has a whole number part and a fraction part separated by a decimal point. For example: 2.35

Topic: Compare Decimals

  • On a number line any number to the left is less than the number to the right

  • To compare decimals using a number line, follow the steps listed below:
    a) First locate the decimals on the number line
    b) Now, compare the decimals

  •  To compare positive decimals using place value follow the steps listed below:
    a) Compare the whole number parts of the decimals. The decimal with the greater whole number part is greater
    b) If the whole number parts are equal, compare the tenths digit (extreme left digits of the decimal part). The decimal with the greater tenths digit is greater.
    c) If the tenths digit is equal then compare the next digit and so on

  • To compare negative decimals using place value we need to follow the steps listed below:
    a) Find the absolute values of the decimals
    b) Compare the absolute values of the decimals. The decimal with greater absolute value is smaller

Topic: Ordering Decimals

  • To order the decimals from least to greatest or greatest to least:
    a) Add zeroes to the decimals so that each decimal has same number of decimal places.
    b) Use the number line or place value to compare the decimals
