Similarity of Figures and Indirect Measurement

This topic explains the use of proportions to find missing measures in similar figures.

Topic: Missing Sides and Angles

  • The symbol ‘~’ means is similar to

  • If two figures are similar then:
    a) The ratios of their corresponding sides are proportional or equivalent.
    b) The corresponding angles are equal.

    For e.g.:
    If ΔABC ~ ΔDEF, then
    AB = BC = AC
    DE     EF     DF

    And, ∠A = ∠D, ∠B = ∠E, ∠C = ∠F

Topic: Applications of Similar Figures

  • If two figures are similar then:
    1) The ratios of their corresponding sides are proportional or equivalent

  • 2) The corresponding angles are equal

Topic: Indirect Measurement - 1

  • If two figures are similar, then the ratio of their corresponding sides is equal.

    For e.g.:
    If ΔABC ~ ΔDEF, then
    AB = BC = AC
    DE     EF     DF
