Relate Addition and Subtraction

This topic deals with the concept of relation between addition and subtraction. We learn to write Fact Families and complete Fact Triangles along with some problem solving applications.

Topic: Relate Addition and Subtraction Facts

  • Fact families are made from related sentences

  • Addition and subtraction are opposite or inverse operations

  • An equation can be used to find the missing addend. An equation is a number sentence that shows 2 amounts are equal

  • Use related facts to solve an equation

Topic: Fact Families and Fact Triangles

  • Fact families are made from related sentences

  • Since addition and subtraction are opposite or inverse operations, if we subtract one addend from the sum, we get the other addend
    3. For example: The fact family for the numbers 2, 3, and 5 is 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 2 = 5, 5 - 2 = 3, 5 - 3 = 2

  • A fact triangle represents numbers that can be used to write a fact family

A fact triangle represents numbers that can be used to write a fact family
  • The number at the top of fact triangle is usually the sum of the numbers at the base.
The operators to be used for writing the fact family are shown in the middle of the triangle. Related addition/subtraction facts can be used to complete a fact triangle
