Divide by 3 and 4

In this topic, we learn to divide by 3 and 4.

Topic: Divide Using Models and Multiplication Facts

  • To divide by 3 using models, make 3 groups

  • To divide by 4 using models, make 4 groups

  • For example: to divide 21 by 3, use 21 counters and make 3 groups. Place equal counters in each group. The number of counters represents 21 ÷ 3

  • Total Number ÷ Number of groups = Number in each group

  • Number of group x Number in each group = Total number

Topic: Divide Using Skip Counting and Repeated Subtraction

  • You can use skip counting to divide by 3 and 4

  • To divide by 3, skip count backwards by 3 until you reach 0.
For example, to divide 18 by 3, start at 18 and skip count backwards by 3 until you reach 0. The number of jumps represents 18 ÷ 3

  • Similarly, to divide by 4, skip count backwards by 4 until you reach 0

  • You can use repeated subtraction to divide by 3 and 4

  • For example, to divide 6 by 3, start at 6 and subtract 3 from 6 until you reach 0. The number of times you subtract represents 6 ÷ 3
