Divide by 8, 9 and 10

In this topic, we learn to divide by 8, 9, and 10.

Topic: Divide Using Models and Related Facts

  • You can divide by 8 and 9 using models

  • For example, to divide 16 by 8 using models, make an array of 8 equal rows. Count the number of counters in each row. The number of counters in each row represents 16 ÷ 8

  • Number in each group x Number of groups = Number in all

  • Number in all ÷ Number in each group = Number of groups

  • Number in all ÷ Number of groups = Number in each group

Topic: Divide Using Repeated Subtraction

  • You can use repeated subtraction to divide by 8 and 9

  • For example, to divide 16 by 8, start at 16 and subtract 8 from 16 until you reach 0

  • 16 – 8 = 8; 8 – 8 = 0

  • The number of times we have subtracted represents 16 ÷ 8

Topic: Divide by 10

  • You can use place value models to divide by 10

  • For example, if you divide 60 by 10, show 60 using tens models

  • Separate the models so there is one ten in each group

  • The number of groups represents 60 ÷ 10

  • Dividing a number by 10 is the same as removing a zero from the right side of the number
