Integers and Number Line

In this topic, we learn to use integers to represent situations and to locate them on a number line. We also learn to compare integers using a number line.

Topic: Integers on a Number Line

  • Negative and positive whole numbers are called integers. For example, 65, 7, and -756 are integers; 1.6 and 1 1/2 are not integers

  • An integer on the right is always greater than an integer on the left on a number line

  • Integers that are on the right side of zero on a number line are called positive integers

  • Integers that are on the left side of zero on a number line are called negative integers

  • Zero is neither positive nor negative

Topic: Integers to Describe Situations

  • An integer is any number from the set {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 …} where … means continues without end

  • Gain, deposit and above represent an increase which means positive (+)

  • Below, withdraw and lost represent a decrease which means negative (-)
