Nonstandard measures and Customary Length

In this topic, we learn to use nonstandard units of measurement, estimate and measure length in customary units, choose an appropriate unit for measuring length, and convert units of length.

Topic: Nonstandard Measures

  • An indirect measure is the measurement of an object through the known measure of another object

  • For Example, if the height of a block is 6 paperclips and 12 blocks are stacked to form a wall, the total height of the stack is 6 x 12 = 72 paperclips

  • When a tool or a benchmark is used to take measurement of an object directly, it is a direct measure

  • For Example, the height of a block is 6 paperclips

Topic: Estimate and Measure Length in Customary Units

  • An inch is divided into 8 parts, the smallest division being 1/8 inches

  • Customary units of length are: inch (in), foot (ft), yard (yd) and mile (mi)

  • The benchmark for an inch is a paperclip; for a foot is the length of a 3-ring binder

  • The benchmark for a yard is the length of a large baseball bat; for a mile, the benchmark is the distance 4 times around 1/4-mile track

Topic: Convert Units of Length

  • 1 foot = 12 inches

  • 1 yard = 3 feet = 36 inches

  • 1 mile = 5280 ft; 1 mile = 1760 yd

  • To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide the smaller unit by the conversion factor

  • To convert a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply the larger unit with the conversion factor
