Properties and Methods of Addition

This topic covers the properties of addition. We learn about the Associative, Identity, and Commutative properties of addition. We also learn some quick methods to add/subtract whole numbers and decimals.

Topic: Properties of Addition

  • Addition properties can help you to add numbers

  • The Associative Property states that the way the addends are grouped does not change the sum. For example: 2 + 3 + 8 = (2 + 8) + 3

  • The Commutative Property states that the order of the addends does not change the sum. For example: 4 + 5 = 5 + 4

  • The Identity Property states that the sum of any number and 0 equals the number. For example: 3 + 0 = 3

Topic: Mental Addition and Subtraction

  • Compensation method can be used to add/subtract mentally

  • To add using compensation method, add the same number to one addend and subtract the same number from the other

  • To subtract using compensation method, add/subtract the same number to both numbers in the problem
