Patterns and Sequences

How does one identify a pattern in a sequence? Given a sequence, how does one find a missing number? This topic covers these concepts and more.

Topic: Arithmetic Sequences

  • A 'sequence' is an ordered set of numbers. Each number in the sequence is called a 'term'

  • Every term in the arithmetic sequence changes by the same amount

  • In most of the arithmetic sequences, the successive terms are formed by addition or subtraction of a certain value from the previous terms

Topic: Non Arithmetic Sequences

  • A non arithmetic sequence generally involves the multiplication or the division operations and may even involve a combination of different operations

  • To identify the pattern in any series, look for a relationship among the first three terms. Check if this relationship applies to the fourth and the fifth terms and so on
